Don’t get me wrong, I like good special effects as well as the next person, but all too often they have been use to pump life into a sagging story. I was beginning to think that the days of the true terror/horror movies were over. I am talking about the ones when a good story, well acted by truly professional actors, under the direction of an exceptional director produced the suspense and fear that made you jump in your seat. But, at last, here it is again, and it was worth the wait.

Zemekis has definitely mastered the genre. He has his fun with us, the audience. We more or less accept that the house where Clarie (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Norman (Harrison Ford) Spencer reside is haunted at the beginning, but as Claire’s hypothesis about the identity of the ghost unravels, you begin to believe that perhaps she is beginning to lose her mind, as her husband delicately (at that point of the movie) suggests. Even Claire begins to believe it. After all, she is in the middle of remodeling the beautiful home of her husband’s childhood after her only child has left for college. Then, too, there was that hideous single-car accident in which she was involved no more than a year earlier. So she assumes that perhaps she is the victim of an overactive imagination and of having to much time on her hands. So she gamely and bravely sets out to continue being the perfect wife of her perfect celebrated high-society husband who is directing some very important and profitable medical research programs.

But soon the evidence of stalking supernatural horror becomes so overwhelming that even logical, pragmatic Norman can’t dismiss it as nonsense. He believes his wife, to her relief, and goes so far as to call a parapsychologist associate at Duke University to ask his advice. He wishes to rid the Normans’ life of this other-worldly presence as much as Claire does. And it is more or less at this point that the fun really begins.

After finally acquiring her husband’s trust about a highly controversial matter, about which nearly no one else believes her, Claire almost immediately loses her trust in Norman when she learns that her picture perfect life is a facade, that the facade is cracking, and that the crack is spreading to the size of the San Andreas Fault. The film then becomes a true craft of suspense, thrills and terror as Claire tries to avoid threats from this world and the next.

It is a great temptation to rapsodize about the excellent job Pfeiffer does from that point on as the terrorized and set-upon Clair, the fine performance Ford delivers as her superficially supportive and apologetic mate, and the great surprise ending of this movie. However, I couldn’t do the job right without revealing the ending of the story, which is definitely one of its treats. I will just say that it was a perfect conclusion of the crescendo of suspense and horror that built up to it, and leave it at that. I wouldn’t spoil the fun of another viewer for anything.

There is a fine supporting cast in this movie, and Zemeckis knows just how much to show them and then remove them so that they truly support rather than detract from the main plot. And the beautiful New England lakeside scenery where much of the action takes place is another fine element of the film.

You will jump, gasp and cover your eyes all the way through this film and enjoy every minute of it. Thanks to Pfeiffer, Ford and Zemeckis for a film that has been justifiably compared to those of Hitchcock. I have to believe that even Hitch himself would have enjoyed this one.

Robert Zemeckis makes his homage to Hitchcock in What Lies Beneath, starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

The Spencer’s -Claire and Norman- are a supposedly happy and successful marriage. He is a prominent scientist, she’s an ex musician that just left her only daughter at college. Free time takes Mrs. Spencer to spy on her neighbors, and from that activity she believes that a crime has been perpetrated next door. Insecure and nervous, Claire’s paranoia grows as a series of paranormal events take place in her perfect home: doors open and close, electrical equipment turn on automatically, spectral visions in the bathtub. Are all these things related? That’s one of the many secrets the movie hides.

A lonely home, secrets trying to be revealed, darkness, ghosts and the impending sensation that we are not sure what our eyes are seeing, What Lies Beneath has enough elements to hook you up for a scary time. Zemeckis takes advantage from every trick, cliche and ideas to spice the story, until he leaves us with a terrible deja vu sensation. The result is a supernatural thriller cleverly built, part psychological, part ghost story.

And one could very well wonder, when Michelle Pfeiffer sees a spectral reflex on the water, if the ghost we are seeing is indeed Mr Hitchcock.

As soon as the credits vanish, we take a walk from moments of Rear Window, Suspicion, Vertigo and even Psycho. The cinematic references overwhelm us, from the lead man’s name, the disturbing music score, the movie’s rhythm, the creepy house alone on a hill. Hitch’s fans will enjoy tremendously this tribute

Pfeiffer and Ford are two stars talented and very charismatic, whose performances give more depth to the story. Pfeiffer, above all, is very convincing as the housewife victim of a series of inexplicable events. Her terror and her pain are very truthful. Ford is somewhat relegated to a second place.

In the end, the secrets that hide What Lies Beneath are not so interesting. The excess of subplots, tributes and tricks make the movie into a series of brilliant moments that are bigger than the whole. For the entertaining time, we can thank Zemeckis. For the suspense and fear that comes from our inner souls, let’s thank Hitchcock, the man that understood that, in a good story, there must lie beneath secrets and emotions too scary to be revealed ever.

Speedgrapher is a gritty grimy adventure into the underworld of Tokyo as it is in this series. Greed and sex fuel most everything in the series. The series is kinky beautiful and messes with your head.

Unlike most of your shoot em up,drama,or harem anime speedgrapher takes a more sadistic look into the life of the Japanese elite. Now this is a very diffrent anime, I couldn’t press the buyer more to watch a few episodes on youtube before buying this series. The series is about a young girl who has special powers and a cult that worships her, the catch being that the cult is filled with the rich, and very very naughty. In exchange for money they can do whatever they wish in an underground layer, to be quite honest most of the men just use it as a brothel. A older man rescues her, and the wierdness ensues as the club crumbles and tries to recapture thier most precious asset. Like most anime a love story is involved, but this one has a older man being a cradlerobber, and ruining his love life with a woman most men would die for. It is not one of those happy lucky star style anime, it leaves you saying this is like the lain series but with perverce creepyness and a cradlerobber as the main character. It will leave you saying wtf every time.

I always warned students at the beginning of each year that I had screened “The Paper Chase” once again and was interested in using the Socratic method to spin the little tumblers of their minds. Certainly this was the film that made me want to curb my innate desire to stand up in the classroom and pontificate on every subject under the sun.

Ostensibly the film is about the pressures of first year students at Harvard Law School, but since most of us do not want to become lawyers, know any lawyers, have any dealings with lawyers or even watch television programs with lawyers, “The Paper Chase” ultimately succeeds as a film about wanting to learn and learning to think. At the heart of the film is James Hart (Timothy Bottoms), come from Minnesota to learn at the feet of the great Professor Charles Kingsfield. Despite some painful moments of confrontation in the classroom with his would be mentor-my favorite: “Mr. Hart, here is a dime. Take it, call your mother, and tell her there is serious doubt about you ever becoming a lawyer”-Hart finds he can play the game and play it well. Having given his mind over to Kingsfield, the question then becomes whether his heart and soul will follow as well. The other members of his study group (which includes Edward Herrmann and James Naughton), make different choices and take different paths in order to survive the year. By the end of the film Hart is more alone than he was at the beginning.

As Kingsfield, John Houseman is the powerful center of the film. A producer and drama teacher for almost half a century, Houseman won the 1973 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and began a new career as an actor in films and a pitchman in television commercials (however, this was not Houseman’s first film, since I know he played an admiral in the political thriller “Seven Days in May”). Indeed, Houseman went on to play the Kingsfield character in the ambitious television versions of the movie. However, it is important to note that those who knew Houseman as a producer or teacher were always quick to point out that he really was acting in “The Paper Chase.” There might be Harvard professors fighting over the honor of being the real Kingfield, but Houseman was indeed just doing a role.

As the autocratic master of his domain, Kingsfield is very much the antithesis of the traditional dedicated teacher usually presented in films about school, a point driven home in the film’s final meeting between Hart and Kingsfield. If there is a happy ending in this film, it is achieved by Hart’s character on a personal, almost private level.

The original novel by John Jay Osborn, Jr. was brought to the film my director James Bridges, who also did the screenplay. Although the sub-plot where Hart discovers the young woman of his affections (Lindsay Wagner) is in fact (gasp!) Kingsfield’s daughter is decidedly contrived, overall the film is an intelligent and thoughtful piece. If you are a teacher, or are thinking about becoming a teacher, “The Paper Chase” is just as much recommended viewing as the more conventional fare as such classics as “Goodbye, Mr. Chips,” “To Sir, With Love,” “Up the Down Staircase,” or more contemporary efforts such as “Songs of the Heart.”

Well… I DID take this class — Contract Law — and I took it at Harvard Law School. The class was not ~exactly~ like the one presented in the film, but my Harvard experience was pretty much like the film.

I saw the film in the theatre, originally, weeks before I started classes at Harvard and it was as if Kingsfield directed his questions into the audience and I wanted to dive under the theatre seat. Obviously I had not read the cases. “Hawkins versus McGee” may have been the first case, but I defy anyone to find “Carbolic Smoke Ball” in their editions of West’s casebook on Contracts.

My own study group was pretty much like the one shown in the film, except there were women in ours, so “The Paper Chase” is pretty much of a “buddy film” in that women play pretty much of the support role — Kingsfield’s daughter and the ever suffering Ashley who is disarming in her performance as she hands Hart the firearm her husband nearly uses on himself.

Yet, these guys are very real and the movie captured the men of my first year study group, except for the effete Bell who they would have chomped down for breakfast — better that they had Tom Cruise from “The Firm” add even more colour to the colourless first year students than Bell, “as in liberty Bell.”

Yet for its dated 1970’s sexist subplots and sometimes silly characters, John Housman manages to hold it all together as the quintessential Harvard professor — and don’t get me wrong — these grand old men are still alive and well and walk those halls working on those of us student who come into those classes with our “skulls full of mush.”

To this day I am deeply moved when Kingsfield describes his “little questions” spinning the tumblers of our minds and in so doing how this process led us to learn how to teach ourselves.

Dated, quaint, and sometimes silly, this film never fails to move me to near tears and a recollection of what those magic years at Harvard were all about and what the process of learning, not just passing an exam, was all about.

If you like Jari’s Get Ripped! Series of workouts, you’re going to love Get Extremely Ripped! The sound and quality of the DVD are fantastic. Jari’s instruction is clear and easy-to-follow and as always, her personality is warm and friendly. This is a challenging high-rep workout without any breaks between sets, so be prepared to sweat! There are two 30 minute programs that can be done separately or done together for a full 60 minute heart-pounding session.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jari Love: Get Extremely Ripped!! Click Here

This workout is done with handheld weights; you can choose whichever weight is most comfortable for you (3 lb to 8 lb). This workout can also be done with a step, but this is totally optional. Each person on Jari’s workout team is using a different weight which is identified on screen along with the amount of calories each person burned during the workout while using that weight. There were two people using a step during the workout, but the others were not. There is also an onscreen clock that pops-up to inform you that that you coming to the end of a set. The clock worked great at encouraging me to really pump-it-up and give it my best, because the end was in sight.

I have to be honest, I personally could not utilize a step during this workout, I would probably collapse, but what is great about this workout is that there are so many options. Using the step is a goal that I have set for myself along with increasing the weight of the hand weights. This workout will continue to be a challenge for me and that is one of the many things I loved about it.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jari Love: Get Extremely Ripped!! Click Here

Jari includes two fantastic 30-minute workouts on this DVD that can be done separately or combined for a super challenge. This is similar to her previous Get Ripped workouts, in that it includes high reps with light weights, but it is shorter than the others so you can still get a great workout if you’re short on time. This strength training workout moves at a non-stop pace to really fatigue your muscles and rev up your metabolism. Jari uses compound exercises, meaning you use your upper and lower body at the same time, so you get a cardio benefit while toning your muscles. As in her other workouts, she includes the calories burned per minute before each exercise and the amount of weight needed for the upcoming exercise. The only equipment required are hand weights (she uses between 5-12 lbs) and an optional step. Jari does not use the step and you’ll get a great workout without it.

I’ve included a breakdown of all the moves below with a brief explanation. Jari splits the exercises into 5 “tracks” per workout that usually consist of two different exercises that work complimentary body parts (such as the quads & hamstrings) and you perform LOTS of repetitions alternating sets of these two moves. I’ve indicated which is move #1 and #2 below. You’ll perform perhaps 20 or more reps of one move before switching to the other move and then you’ll do it all over again. Thankfully, she has a clock that counts down as you do the last 30 seconds of each move. As usual, Jari switches up the tempo and number of reps to keep things fresh.

>>>>> Workout 1:

Warm up with Squats, Alternating Lunges w/ Hammer Curl, Biceps Curl, Shoulder Raise, Shoulder Press, Upright Row

- Lunge Row and Stiff Leg Dead Lift: (1.Reverse lunge with simultaneous back row, 2. deadlift to work hamstrings)

- Pulse Quickie Squats with Knee Lift Bicep Curl: (1.Squat from side to side, 2. balance on one leg while lifting the other knee and doing a bicep curl)

- Pulse Wide Squats/Around the World and Step Up Pec Presses: (1.Plie Squat combined with shoulder lift to front then side, 2.March in place or onto the step and do overhead shoulder press)

- Tricep Butler and Side Squat off Bench/Anterior Raise: (1. Sort of a curtsy squat with leg lift to the back combined with triceps press, 2. Squat to the side and combine with shoulder raise to the front)

- Balancing Act and Side Squat/Lateral Raise: (1. Balance on one leg while performing a knee lift or front kick then perform a reverse lunge, 2. Squat to the side while doing shoulder rise to the side)

>>>> Workout 2

- Clean and Press and Step Knee Hammer Head (1. Squat then left weights overhead in a shoulder press, 2. Back lunge then knee lift with simulataneous hammer curl for biceps)

- Moving Side Squat Lunge Back & Knee Shoulder Press (1.Step out to side and squat, 2. then overhead shoulder press combined with knee lift followed by a squat)

- Horizontal Rows and Narrow Squat: (Back Row then squats with the feet close together then add knee raise)

- Reverse Flies and Overhead Triceps Extension: (works your back, then the back of your arms. Your perform the fly while lifting legs to the back)

- Pushups and Plank/Abs: Lots of pushups alternating with planks

Includes 8 Min Abs Bonus that has crunches, triceps pushups, planks, bicycles and bridges with leg lift.

- Cooldown with a full body stretch

Cons: Jari is a little more chatty in this exercise and as always her “motivational” speaking aggravates me a wee bit. Also, sometimes she moves a little fast, so this workout is more for the advanced or intermediate exerciser. I also don’t like that she does not include the number of reps for each exercise, however, she does still include the recommended amount of weight to use. These are minor details, and wouldn’t prevent me from doing the workout.

Overall, I like this workout DVD and will definitely use this for days when I’m short on time because it’s a scorcher. I couldn’t give this 5 stars because there just wasn’t enough variety.

I did ballet for about 12 years. I hadn’t taken a class since I was 17, although I have taken other forms of dance since. I am 27 now. This DVD was like transporting myself back into ballet class. The dancers are beautiful, the music is nice, and Jennifer Kries is pleasant to watch as always.

I just tried it for the first time, and started with the Intermediate workout. It was challenging! I very much enjoyed the workout. I got a decent cardio workout from it too.

My only complaint, and reason for giving it 4 stars instead of 5, is that it was too short. At 15 minutes or so, you are just getting going! The DVD is over quite suddenly, and your heart is pumping, and you’re left going “that’s it? no!” In my opinion 15 minutes is hardly enough time for a good workout, even though you will be sweating by the time the 15 minutes is up.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Jennifer Kries: New Body Ballet! Click Here

I think this will be great for days that I want a shorter, but good, all over workout. Maybe on days I do yoga as well. I think this would be a good place for beginners to start, considering the length of the workout and the different workouts for each level (beginner, intermediate, advanced). This will be one of my favorites. I’ve looked at other ballet DVDs out there and I think this one may be the best. Too bad it’s not longer!

This Ballet DVD is broken down into beginner, intermediate, and advanced. However, both the intermediate and the advanced are the exact same workout. In other words, the advanced portion is the exact recording of the intermediate, with a disclosure at the start saying to “just kick higher”. I was so extremely disappointed because I was soooo hoping for more challenging ballet moves. Also, each segment is only 15 minutes long. So it’s hard to get a full, challenging ballet workout with this disc, unless you’re willing to play the same sequence of moves twice. Elise Gulan’s Ballet Conditioning is a far more challenging and full length workout.

Cormac McCarthy’s novel NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN has been successfully transformed into a film in the skilled hands of Ethan and Joel Coen. The story is intact, the characters are given the dialog so uniquely McCarthy’s invention, and the horror of the message of the book - that we have come to a point in time when crime, especially random murder, surrounds our lives - is, if anything, even more pungent than on the pages of the book. It is an amazing, and a highly disturbing movie, and while this viewer is one of the few who does not believe it deserved the Oscar for Best Picture, there is little doubt that it is a brilliant piece of cinema.

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Country for Old Men! Click Here

The story is fairly simple: on the raw plains of Texas a slaughter of men and dogs engaged in a drug deal is discovered by a simple guy Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin). Moss observes the mayhem, sees the drugs, finds the 2 million dollar payoff money, takes the money, and embarks on an escape, leaving his wife Carla (Kelly Macdonald) to escape the pursuit of a mad killer Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who in turn is being pursued by the local sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones) and a hired hitman (Woody Harrelson). The satchel of money contains a tracking device and Chigurh has the instrument necessary to follow the trail the device leads. The remainder of the film is the pursuit both in Texas and in Mexico, accompanied by countless brutal murders of all sorts by the crazed Chigurh, until a surprise ending.

But the toughest part of this violent film is more in the discussion of shared philosophies between the sheriff and his old cronies: they reflect on the sad state of universal crime that is so different and more malevolent than in the ‘old days’. The conversations, in the superb dialog of these old men, bring our attention to some realities we would rather not confront, and those realities are even more disturbing than the repeated images of bloated bodies and senseless murders that fill the screen. Jones, Brolin, and Bardem are indeed superb in their roles, but the small cameos of the townsfolk of Texas are little gems of acting and direction. This is a difficult film to watch because of all of the violence, but the message is one we must heed. We may be allowing the creation of ‘no country for any men’. Grady Harp, March 08

Violent, dark, gripping and an off-humor tone that is like no other. `NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN’ is indeed a Coen Brothers masterpiece!

Buy,Download, Or Stream No Country for Old Men! Click Here

The film is possibly the most ambitious film from the Award winning filmmakers, Joel and Ethan Coen (”Fargo”, “The Big Lebowski”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “Raising Arizona”) based on the 2005 novel by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Cormac McCarthy. “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won four which include “Best Achievement in Directing”, “Best Motion Picture of the Year”, “Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role” and “Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published”.

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” makes its re-appearance on Blu-ray with a new audio track, five hours of bonus footage and a digital copy.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is featured in 1080p High Definition with an aspect ratio of (2:35:1). One thing you will notice is how the colors of the rugged outdoors really pops. The earth tones and its vibrancy during the day, to the dark black and blues during the night. I saw no major artifacting or high grain during the low light conditions.

Also, when you see the characters in High Definition, you see the wrinkles, the pores…very detailed picture quality. Even the people who were shot and killed, good amount of detail in the bullet wounds and showcasing how much detail the crew went into making sure the these wounds look realistic. There is no denying that the picture quality for “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is amazing and right up there with the top tier titles. The backgrounds of Southwest Texas, the multiple colors that showcase the vibrancy of the film, to the dark scenes that exhibit no problems and of course the overall details that you just never think of, are seen quite clearly on this title.

Director of Photography Roger Deakins (”A Beautiful Mind”, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “The Big Lebowski”, “Fargo”, “The Shawshank Redemption”) continues to be one of the top DP’s in the industry and was definitey deserving of an Academy Award nomination for his awesome cinematography.

As for audio, this is where “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” takes a big step up to perfection. Buena Vista Home Entertainment made sure the new soundtrack for this second version release utilized an English 5.1 DTS-HD (48 kHz/24-bit) track over the PCM version. And boy, does it make a difference. If you thought the gun shots as the bullets hiss, the rifle shots, a dogs being shot, vehicles moving, those action scenes alone sound clearer and punchier than the previous PCM track. The dialogue is clear and there is just a sense of more clearer sound than the PCM track. Quite frankly, this is the best audio treatment of the film and the last one was magnificent but for this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition, audio is excellent!

And again, the film was definitely deserving for its Academy Award nominations for its achievements in Sound and Sound Editing. The crew did a wonderful job!

SPECIAL FEATURES:

This second version Blu-ray release of “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is packed with special features. From December 2007 to February 2008, television, live, online and radio interviews are presented on disc. So, the hardcore filmmaker or the fans of the film definitely have plenty of content to watch and listen to. As mentioned earlier in the review, this 2-Disc Collector’s Edition comes with a new audio track, a digital copy of the film and five hours of special features. Included are:

* The Making Of No Country For Old Men - (24:29) A behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to create a Coen Brothers’ movie. Featuring interviews with the Coen Brothers, cast and crew. Included on the last Blu-ray but nevertheless, very informative and entertaining to watch. Also, how certain cast members were selected. Surprising especially when you find out that Kelly Macdonald (Carla Jean) is from Scotland and has a strong, thick accent but played the character of a girl with a Southern drawl quite well!

* Working with the Coens - (8:07) The cast and crew of No Country for Old Men talk about working with the legendary duo. It’s great to hear the cast and crew talk about working with the brothers and talk about how they want a certain scene a certain way. Fun featurette that was included on the last Blu-ray.

* The Diary of A Country Sheriff - (6 min.) A look at the relationship between Javier Bardem’s Anton Chigurh and Josh Brolin’s Llewelyn Moss through the eyes of Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones). A good explanation of how this proud Sheriff who is about to retire notices that he probably is in no league to take on the crimes of today and the types of killers out there. The days of being a sheriff with no weapons are a thing of the past.

* Josh Brolin Unauthorized - (9 min.) An interesting perspective of “behind-the-scenes” as Josh Brolin interviews certain cast members and the crew. A dramatic “behind-the-scenes” featuring the cast members with some sort of an edge. A very interesting featurette.

* Press Timeline - A treasure trove of in-depth interviews and conversations with the Coen Brothers, Tommy Lee Jones, Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem–never before available on disc–offering viewers the most comprehensive look ever at the making of No Country for Old Men. This is where the bulk of the special features are featured and what’s so cool is that some of these are online interviews, live with audience interviews, radio interviews, etc.

1. Lunch with David Polan (10/25/07) - 26:21 interview with both Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is definitely not a film for the weak hearted. The film has its many layers but I think that Javier Bardem’s excellent portrayal of the psychopath Anton Chigurh is going to ruffle some feathers because of his overall look, his demeanor and his eyes of the thrill of a kill, you can’t help but think how twisted this character is and for certain characters, who encounter Chigurh, you are at the edge of your seat as he wants to determine the fate if they live or die. It’s twisted and his means of killing and the barrage of violence is not going to make the squeamish any happier.

This is possible the Coen Brothers darkest film. Granted “Fargo” was a dark film but “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” is well-written, well-acted, well-filmed…it’s the Coen Brothers masterpiece extravaganza. Dark humor, violence galore but a well-told plot and characters that you want to watch.

For me, the violence was excessive but it was needed. It was very important to show Chigurh as this psychopath and the level of detail that went into showing those bloody scenes was well done by the crew.

As the Coen Brothers and Javier Bardem did a wonderful job, you also have to give the thumbs up to the other talent.

Josh Brolin being denied an Academy Award nomination was a bit of a shock. Where many people have not been fortunate to get away from Chigurh, the character of Llewelyn Moss was a constant challenge but you actually felt yourself rooting for Moss for a little while.

Tommy Lee Jones as Sheriff Bell was portrayed very well. A World War II Vet and proud Sheriff who is now having to deal with drug deals and mafia style killings, he’s not prepared to take on these type of people. This is not the same country he lived in before, it’s become dangerous and hence the title “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN”.

I will have to say the shining star was Kelly MacDonald as Carla Jean. At first, you think that the woman is the token broad at the beginning of the film but her final scenes perhaps is a scene that has left many people wondering what happened to her character. It’s because her character was able to do something that many of the other characters have not and thus, comes away being someone special. And I also have to say that I was shocked to find out that Macdonald was Scottish and had this thick accent and to hear hear playing a woman with this Southern drawl was amazing. Well done!

Many people who purchased the first Blu-ray disc may be asking themselves, is this second collector’s edition worth it? Absolutely yes! The new DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack is just amazing. Combine that with already the perfect video, video and audio are just perfect. The special features also gets a 5 with five hours of interview footage and in depth knowledge behind what the Coen Brothers wanted to accomplish in the film, to hear the talents (with the exception of Tommy Lee Jones) really show their passion towards this film and just very good insight of the making of the film.

So, as much as I hate re-releases especially if they are not long after the previous was released, in this case, I have to say that the release of “NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN” was warranted. For such an incredible and magnificent film, it deserved special treatment and now it does.

“NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN - 2-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION” receives an A+ and is highly recommended!

Lucky enough to catch this film before it’s release and really enjoyed it. Hutton’s effort to reveal rather than instruct is effective in creating what turns out to be a complex and deeply moving portrait. Rather than take up a political agenda, the film, with it’s long careful gaze, meditates on the plight facing the small town of Stanley. Hutton’s steady hand is able to illuminate the subtle tropes of abandonment and loss and is a welcome guide for a subject that feels so delicate at points that it could vanish without more than a whisper. The result is poignant and deeply heartbreaking, and perhaps a far stronger call to action than could have been achieved by a more didactic approach.

I was lucky enough to see this film at SXSW. Noah Hutton (DIR) really made an incredible film that stood out from the pack. I know we’ll see more from him and I’m looking forward to his next film. Crude Independence is absolutely worth buying.

This is the way fairy tales used to be — before they got bleached, pressed, and de-linted by half-wits trying to protect tender ears. Before they got Disney-fied. Sure, there’s violence here, some of it shocking, but none of it gratuitous. Could it give a kid nightmares? Maybe. But given today’s pablum stories, maybe it’s about time.

Pan’s Labyrinth takes us directly into the subconscious, and into the storyforms that infuse all of the great myths, fairy tales, and religions. It’s a rich and satisfying stew of symbolism, mystery, and redemption. Multilayered and inspiring, it’s a film you’ll want to see again. It’s hard not to gush, but it’s been so long since a movie this good has made it into the quasi-mainstream.

What makes Pan’s Labyrinth most effective is it’s juxtaposition of harsh “reality” and the mysterious world that lives side by side with it. The heroine, a young girl who may carry a magical seed of immortality (the soul of god’s only child who once ventured into the world of men, suffered, and died long ago), is contacted by shapeshifting fairies who lead her to a faun (much like the mythological Pan) who says she may reclaim her throne and escape the mortal world by performing three tasks. The faun in Pan’s Labyrinth is every bit as complex as the mythological Pan, a creature perhaps older than the gods themselves. There’s something sly, and perhaps even sexual about this elegant and almost alien faun, as he represents the forces at play inside this sensitive young girl. In fact, like every good fairy tale, all of the strange, wondrous, and chilling creatures represent facets of the subconscious, including baby-eating ghouls, flitting fairies, and gluttonous toads.

Pan’s Labyrinth is a commentary on the resiliency and power of the human imagination, and takes us to the place where dreams are spun and the great heroic tale of overcoming (of the self and the world) takes root. That spark of the divine in all of us — or at least the hope of it — powers the great story of our lives, and we need tales like this to remind of us of the magic and transformative power of story telling. In the flickering light of the theater, like some great hearth around which we’ve gathered, Pan’s Labyrinth took me back to my childhood, and made me think of so many of the great stories I’d read over the years — of demonic dogs with saucer-sized eyes, of child-stealing trolls, and evil stepmothers. And, finally, of the champions who venture down into those great cracks in the Earth, where the roots of mythic trees twist and wind and the greatest treasure of all can be found: the noble, heroic, and undying spirit that lies within us.

First of all, this film is not suitable for children. It is intended to be an adult fairytale with a young girl as its protagonist. Everyone I know who have viewed this film has loved it, including my 75 year old father, who is not really into foreign films or art films.

The is not suitable for children for a few scenes of torture and violence. While difficult to watch, it serves to create a sense of real peril, ugliness, cruelty and evil that propels our protagonist to seek comfort in another world of grotesque beauty. She is a young girl in the midst of a brutal civil war where both sides reside under her roof, and the only reason she is safe is because her mother is pregnant by a fascist general. There is a sense that this safety is precarious and could evaporate quickly due to circumstances beyond her control.

The protagonists other world is sparked by a discovery of an old labyrinth by the old house where the general holds his position and has a doctor see to the pregnant mother’s ailing health.

This other world that is created is amazingly done and is beautiful in its grotesquely Gothic way. The original score is perfect for the film with its haunting humming lullaby. The young girl is perfect young heroine that is flawed but lovable. You want her to fulfill her destiny and escape to her throne in a magical place. The rest of the cast are amazing showing the full range of humanity in a time of war from immense cruelty to amazing courage and compassion. The film itself has a great sense of pacing, almost poetic writing, and is able to keep up the feeling of suspense.

The movie is sad, beautiful, cruel, agonizing, and has kept haunting me. The film made me cry and at times took my breath away. It made me feel great to see such a well-made movie in the era of over hyped corporate films. This had the craftsmanship of an expert watchmaker.

The lullaby still lingers in my mind.

The movie is truly amazing! (And it`s an extended edition!) Anyone who liked the first two will literally fall in love with this one! I think that even if you didn’t see the first two, you will like this one because of what it talks about. This movie is about something we all go through: saying good-bye to our friends after high school. Addiotionally, it’s nice to see ateen movie that doesn’t revolve around sex, drugs, violence, and profanity.

The East High Wildcats decide to put on their final show together at their school: a musical about their twelfth grade experience. It’ll be a pretty unique musical because, for once, they won’t have to play a character - they’ll be playing themselves! But due to her incredible intelligence, Gabriella, the female protagonist, is offered to skip her senior year in high school and go to straight onto college right away. Will she accept Standard’s offer, leaving her friends, boyfriend, and the musical behind? Will Troy, the male protagonist, chose to continue with basketball or will he chose a career than involves acting? Will Sharpay win a scholarship to New York’s Julliard University of Performing Arts or will her brother? Will Ryan and Kelsi find true love? Find out in this exciting conclusion to one of the world’s greatest film series! The only good thing recently produced by the screwed-up Disney Channel! Yes I hate Disney Channel, Hannah Montana, Cory in the House, Jonas Brothers, and all of the other inappropriate teen shows they’ve decided to put on a children’s channel. But High School Musical is different. It teaches both kids and teens a valuable lesson and it allows adults to revisit their past. The plot is actually relevant to what many people feel and…it’s a teenage musical! You don’t see something like that everyday! Just watching Troy and Gabriella perform a beautiful waltz is reason enough to buy this film. Also, the old fashioned music at the end proves that rap, hip hop, and pop isn’t always what you’ll see in a teenage film.

The songs are as original, catchy, and wonderful as they are visually stunning! During “Scream,” the turning walls that represent Troy’s confusion are spectacular! The disappearing pictures on the wall in Gabriella’s solo “Walk Away” were really quite sad. The Statue of Liberty that shoots fireworks out of its head in “I Want It All” is amazing. The sets in “A Night To Remember” will leave you with your mouth wide open. “Right Here Right Now,” “Can I Have This Dance,” and “Just Wanna Be With You” are three incredible romance songs. And, of course, Troy and Chad turning into little boys in “The Boys Are Back” was really cute. That reminds, “Right Here Right Now” and “The Boys Are Back” are so of my favorites because of what they talk about: not wanting to grow up. Anyway, n case you forgot or are too lazy to read the customer reviews for the HSM3 soundtrack, here are the songs:

Buy,Download, Or Stream High School Musical 3: Senior Year! Click Here

1. “Now Or Never” - Troy and the Wildcats basketball team

2. “Right Here, Right Now” - Troy and Gabriella

3. “I Want It All” - Sharpay and Ryan [A TRUE BROADWAY SONG!]

4. “Can I Have This Dance? (Version I)” - Troy and Gabriella

5. “A Night To Remember” - cast!

6. “Just Wanna Be With You” - Ryan & Kelsi, Troy & Gabriella

7. “The Boys Are Back” - Troy and Chad

8. “Walk Away” - Gasbriella

9. “Scream” - Troy

10. “Can I Have This Dance? (Version II)” - Troy and Gabriella

11. “Senior Year Spring Musical” ***made up of reprises of NOW OR NEVER (Chad, the Wildcats basket team, cheerleaders), I WANT IT ALL (Ryan), JUST WANNA BE WITH YOU (Sharpay & Jimmy, and later Troy and Gabriella), and A Night To Remember (Sharpay vs. Tiara), as well as a new song: Last Chance (Ryan and Kelsi)***

12. “We’re All In This Together” - cast!

13. “High School Musical” - cast!

14. “Just Getting Started” - during the end credits, winner of the Get In The Picture ABC7 contest

By the way, during the “I Want It All,” you actually see Gabriella The Maid a bit more than you did in the theaters because you see that part of the song in a different camera angle than you did in theaters. That also lets you see an important-looking lady giving Ryan a newspaper with him and Sharpay on the cover. This is not due to the extended edition thing because the song is the same length, but, like I said, the camera angle is different so you see more things.

The special features on this Blu-ray are freakin’ cool! Even though it’s a single disc release, it has the exact same content found on the Two-Disc release, plus more! These are the Special Features (the last two aren’t found on the two-disc release).

– Extended Version Of The Movie

– Optional Sing Along Version

– Bloopers

– Deleted Scenes

– “Cast Goodbyes” feature

– “Night Of Nights” feature

– “It’s All In The Dress” feature

– “Senior Awards” feature

– New Cast Profiles

In addition, just like in the Two-Disc release, you can download a digital copy of the movie. And as if that weren’t enough, it comes with the first disc of the Two-Disc Edition!!!!! Now you can watch the movie practically anywhere because you have the regular version as well as the Blu-ray version!!!! What do you know, it is a two disc after all. ^_^

An enjoyable, fun film courtesy of a bigger budget, better production, stage and lighting, this is the best “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” film of the three. The transfer on to Blu-ray is excellent in picture and audio quality and Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment really went all out with this “Deluxe Extended Edition” release.

With the previous two films debuting on the Disney Channel, “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” was the first of the three films to go on the big screen and eventually having the largest opening weekend for a musical film ever earning $42 million in North America and $40 million overseas in its first three days of release. Opening at #1 and also having solid sales with its musical soundtrack.

One can say it’s the typical teenage angst that we saw from the first previous two films but what makes “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” so much better is the higher production values. The film features one of the most ambitious sets, choreography, costume and stage designs, lighting and uses of color in a musical.

And because the higher production values, it definitely heightens the enjoyability of the film. From performances in the basketball court, outdoors at a college campus, a junkyard and more, the cinematography is really solid.

And of course, everything translates well on Blu-ray.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

“HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” is featured in 1080p High Definition (1:85:1) and the picture quality is excellent. In one musical segment titled “I Want it All” featuring Sharpay and her twin brother Ryan Evans, I was just amazed by the sudden shifts of color and how amazing it looked. The colors were just vibrant and after watching the film on Blu-ray, I had to see how different the experience of watching it on Blu-ray versus DVD. The Blu-ray colors just were amazing and on DVD, it was good but not in the same vibrancy as the Blu-ray. This segment just was a great example of good colorful choices on costume design and set design and there are many instances that really stick out in the film. Even in the non-musical segments, the outdoor and indoor segments were colorful and looked great on Blu-ray.

As for the audio, the audio quality is of course music-driven and music really comes alive with the English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. I did notice a few instances of rear channels being used during scenes with a lot of people but in most part, the film is dialogue and music driven and overall audio quality is also great.

So, picture and audio quality for “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR” is fantastic!

SPECIAL FEATURES:

And this is probably where Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment really went all out in this DELUXE EXTENDED EDITION release. You get a total of three discs, the first being the Blu-ray which is the extended version of the movie, the second being the Digital Copy and the third being the DVD copy of the extended edition movie. Having not watched the normal theatrical version, I do know that the original had 112 minutes and this extended version is 117 minutes long.

As for special features, this is where the Blu-ray shines. Included are:

* Senior Awards - The crew felt that with the talent graduating from “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL”, a yearbook was created with photos from present but also the cast having the ability to vote for “Best Dressed”, “Best Comedian”, “Best Couple”, etc.

* New Cast Profiles - This segment features the passing of the torch to the new characters: Matt Prokop (Jimmie Zara), Justin Martin (Donny Dion) and Jemma McKenzie-Brown (Tiara Gold). With clips from their video reports, from beginning when they first started and eventually making friends with the original cast and interviews about the three becoming part of the popular trilogy.

* Disney Live Network - The ability to include your photos into the “EAST HIGH SCHOOL” yearbook ala BD-Live and more.

* Cast Goodbyes - Interviews with the cast and Director Kenny Ortega and everyone saying goodbye and being emotional during the final shot and much more. The cast reflecting on their last chance to be with each other as a group.

* Deleted Scenes - About eight deleted scenes with an introduction by Director Kenny Ortega who mentioned it was done because of pacing and how difficult it was to cut some of these parts.

* Bloopers - These are not the same bloopers shown at the end credits, these are totally different.

* Sing Along with the Movie - By enabling the sing along subtitles, you can watch certain songs and sing to them.

* Night of Nights - A featurette on the prom and having to prepare for the number and learn the choreography.

* It’s All in the Dress - Creating the dream prom and the ideas on the prom dresses for the actresses.

* Table of Contents - Similar to a year book, this section features photos and you can skip pages but also access certain special features and Easter Eggs. You can go to previous or next page via remote, if you press up on each page with your remote and select on the photos for each page, you either can access a special feature (that is also listed on the special feature section) or get a East High Wildcats claw. These claws are hidden short video segments featuring behind-the-scenes footage not featured in the special features section. The hidden claws can be found on the following pages and you can access the following Easter Eggs:Page 2 - Crazy improv segment

JUDGMENT CALL:

Overall, I was quite impressed with this Blu-ray disc releae of “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”. On the extended version of the film, I was quite amazed by the production values from the stage, set and costume design, the cinematography, the lighting and the Blu-ray disc transfer of the film and seeing how beautiful and colorful the picture quality was and how clear and live the music sounds, fans of the film and have a Blu-ray player are truly in for a treat.

And to celebrate the “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment included the extended version on DVD and a digital copy disc as well.

And the number of special features and Easter Eggs were also another positive of the Deluxe Extended Edition.

If you enjoyed the previous two “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” films, one thing you felt when watching those films are “Disney” musicals. Something you expected to see on the Disney Channel. With “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL 3: SENIOR YEAR”, because of the high production value, the film really looked extremely well and after watching the special features, you learn that the cast really had to go all out in learning the choreography and with this film being the cast’s final film together, they went all out.

Now, how did I feel about the music in this film? I think with every “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” that I’ve watched, there were always numbers that I enjoyed and numbers that tend to stick in your mind. But I have to say that this third film, the music was quite solid. Also, I think that the cast felt more at ease and were much more comfortable with their surroundings and were not as stiff in the choreography. The songs were sung well, the choreography was great!

But thanks to the higher budget and better production quality, I believe that director Kenny Ortega had much more freedom and again, with this being the final film for the main cast, everyone gave their best and it showed!

A fantastic Blu-ray release and a must-own for “HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL” fans!
